Google to develop 'smart-televisions'

An imitation Web site for Google, Goojje, has emerged in China as the country faces off against the real Google over its local operators in Beijing on January 29, 2010. The new Goojje search engines was launched in China after Google announced it would pull out of the country. The logo of Goojje is a play on Google's Chinese name "Gu Ge", substituting "jie" for, the Chinese word for older sister, for "ge", which means older brother. "Sister was very happy when brother gave up the thought of leaving and stayed for sister," the inscription explanation on the website reads, mocking Google's decision to leave China. SAN FRANCISCO, May 20 (UPI) -- U.S. Internet giant Google said Thursday it is ready to launch television-based programming that offers a wide range of searches from the living room.

During the keynote address in San Francisco at Google's annual development conference Google I/O 2010, the technology company's senior product manager, Rishi Chandra said, "Video should be consumed on the biggest, best, and brightest screen in your house, and that's the TV," Ars Technica reported.

Google has the option of building a separate component that would sit near the television or incorporate digital search capacity with hardware inside televisions, which might be developed by numerous companies.

Google plans to use an Android operating system with an open source code to encourage application development.

Google said it was working with Intel to supply microprocessors and Sony to develop televisions that would be, if you will, smart-televisions. Google is also working with Logitech to build remotes for the system, ComputerWorld reported.

Google said the systems could be on the market by the end of the year.
