U.S. markets and euro lose ground

NEW YORK, May 18 (UPI) -- U.S. markets displayed their volatility Tuesday, as early gains were swept away with the euro back on a declining track.

The euro reached a four-year low against the dollar Monday, before gaining some traction. On Tuesday, it continued to rise against the dollar early, but gains slipped away as the euro dropped to $1.2213 from Monday's $1.2384.

By close, the Dow Jones industrial average shed 114.88 points, or 1.08 percent, to 10,510.95. The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 16.14, or 1.42 percent, to 1,120.80. The Nasdaq composite index lost 36.97, or 1.57 percent, to 2,317.26.

On the New York Stock Exchange 703 stocks advanced and 2,362 declined on a volume of 6.1 billion shares traded.

The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note rose 1 3/32 to yield 3.363 percent.

Against the yen, the dollar fell to 92.25 yen from Monday's 92.52 yen.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 index added 0.07 percent, 6.88, to 10,242.64.

In Britain, the FTSE 100 index rose 0.85 percent, 44.80, to 5,307.34.
