NEW YORK, May 18 (UPI) -- Drug giant Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp. said it would appeal a court ruling in Manhattan that found the company guilty of widespread sexual discrimination.
The company issued a statement that said it was "disappointed in the jury's verdict and the $3.3 million award to the plaintiffs," the New York Daily News reported Tuesday.
A lawyer for the plaintiffs, Katherine Kimpel, said Novartis "is a company stuck in a different century." Awards in the case for 12 plaintiffs ranged from $50,000 to $600,000, but the total could be far higher when a decision is made how much to award 5,600 women who signed onto a class-action case against the company.
"It's just sad that they didn't look at women as a value for the company," said Holly Waters, a former Novartis sales representative who testified that the company reacted to her pregnancy by firing her.
