
WASHINGTON, May 5 (UPI) -- The World Bank said Wednesday it had appointed Indonesia's Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati to be its managing director of the World Bank Group.
"I am delighted to announce the appointment of Sri Mulyani Indrawati. She has been an outstanding Finance Minister with in-depth knowledge of both development issues and the role of the World Bank Group," said Robert Zoellick, president of the bank that is a key lender to developing nations.
Indrawati graduated from the University of Indonesia with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and finished her Ph.D. at the University of Illinois. She has been named Euromoney Magazine's Global Finance Minister of the Year and Emerging Markets' Best Finance Minister in Asia. She has also appeared frequently on the Forbes list of the 100 Most Powerful Women in the world.
She will take over supervision of World Bank regions, Latin America and Caribbean, Middle East and North Africa, and East Asia and the Pacific regions.
