WASHINGTON, May 5 (UPI) -- Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski said Wednesday the Internet should be reregulated to protect net neutrality.

Genachowski's staff has begun briefing FCC commissioners on ways to regulate the Internet under existing phone network rules to require Internet providers to treat traffic equally and not block Web sites, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Phone and cable companies oppose the rules, fearing rate controls or rules forcing them to share networks with rivals, the Journal said.
