WASHINGTON, April 30 (UPI) -- Two bills in Congress would strengthen the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and increase fines imposed on automakers for defective cars.
Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, has submitted a bill for committee consideration that would allow the NHTSA to impose a per-vehicle fee to go to the NHTSA budget, the Detroit Free Press reported Friday.
In a separate bill, Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., proposes to add new restrictions on former NHTSA staff members who switch over to jobs in the automotive industry.
The bills would also end a cap on fines the NHTSA can impose.
An Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers spokeswoman, Gloria Bergquist, said the trade group was still studying Waxman's proposals.
She said it was "a belt-and-suspenders approach and probably tape-and-staples on top."
"We're really going to be urging lawmakers to focus on the few measures that would produce the most substantial safety benefit in the shortest time," she said.
