U.S. markets recover from steep losses

CHICAGO, April 22 (UPI) -- United and Continental airlines were closing in on a merger deal Thursday that would create the largest airline in the world with headquarters in Chicago.
The new company would claim a total market value of more than $6 billion, Bloomberg News reported Thursday.
Continental head Jeff Smisek would lead the company as chief executive officer, and United boss Glenn Tilton would be a non-executive chairman, the Chicago Tribune reported.
Earlier Thursday, US Airways withdrew its bid for United Airlines when it learned United was in talks with Continental.
