ANKARA, Turkey, April 16 (UPI) -- The unemployment rate in Turkey rose a full percentage point to 14.5 percent in January, the Turkish Statistics Institute in Ankara said Friday.

The agency said 230,000 people became newly unemployed in January despite significant gains elsewhere in the economy, such as industrial production and exports, the Zaman daily reported.

"The employment rate, or the percentage of the population employed, decreased from 41.2 percent to 40.6 percent in an indication that some people are becoming discouraged from even applying for work," the report said.

In a year-over-year comparison, however, January's rate was 1 percent lower than January 2009, TurkStat said.
