China touts expertise in high-speed rail

BEIJING, April 7 (UPI) -- Accepted bids of Chinese-managed high-speed U.S. railroad projects would comply with U.S. laws, a high-ranking Railroad Ministry official in Beijing said.

China has signed agreements to cooperate with the state of California and General Electric in the construction of high-speed bullet trains, but has no formal contract for any specific projects yet, The New York Times reported Wednesday.

Chinese Railroad Ministry director of high-speed rail Zheng Jian said China "would send many high-end engineers and high-end technicians" to work in the United States if contracts are signed.

Although the legal and political systems are different, China would also comply with U.S. laws, he said repeatedly in a recent interview.

Ironically, U.S. companies imported Chinese labor to build railroad lines across the Western states 150 years ago. Now, the United States is looking for Chinese technology.

China is well ahead of the United States in experience and investment in high speed rail.

China is expected to spend $300 billion on so-called bullet train systems in the next three years, compared to a $13 billion investment in the United States in the next five.
