DETROIT, April 5 (UPI) -- General Motors Co. said Monday it would add 100 jobs to a transmission plant in Warren, Mich., to make up for torrid sales of several models.

The automaker said in a statement sales of the Equinox rose 130 percent in the first quarter compared with January-March of 2009. Sales of the LaCrosse are up 197 percent year-to-year in the first quarter while sales of the Terrain were up 245 percent compared to the Pontiac Torrent, the car it replaced.

"Increased market demand is driving expansion," plant manager Dave Tatman said.

United Auto Workers Local 909 Chairman Don Sharp said the increase was "great news."

The new positions will be added to the second shift, GM said.
