OTTAWA, March 16 (UPI) -- Canadian manufacturing sales rose for the fifth straight month in January, up 2.4 percent to $44.6 billion, Statistics Canada reported from Ottawa Tuesday.

Of 21 industries, 17 reported gains in monthly sales, led by primary metal manufacturers led the gains, which were up 8.5 percent.

Sales of plastic and rubber products rose 5.6 percent in January, and the petroleum and coal products industry reported a sales increase of 3.4 percent, StatsCan said.

The transportation equipment industry's sales decline was led by aerospace product and parts production, which declined 3.4 percent in January after a 28.5 percent increase in December, the report said.

Regionally, higher manufacturing sales were reported in seven provinces in January, led by British Columbia, Quebec and Ontario, the agency said.
