Canadian trade surplus jumps in January

OTTAWA, March 11 (UPI) -- Canada's international monthly trade surplus jumped more than ten-fold in January to $799 million, Statistics Canada reported from Ottawa Thursday.

Imports declined 1.7 percent to $32.2 million while exports expanded 0.5 percent to $33 million, driving the monthly trade surplus up from $75 million in December, the agency said.

"Exports to the United States decreased 0.6 percent and imports declined 0.5 percent, largely as a result of lower trade of automotive products," StatsCan said. "As a result, Canada's trade surplus with the United States was $4.1 billion in January, almost unchanged from $4.2 billion in December."

Exports to countries other than the United States grew 3.8 percent while imports from those countries decreased 3.9 percent. That narrowed Canada's trade deficit with those countries to $3.3 billion in January from $4.1 billion in December, the report said.
