WEST BRIDGEWATER, Mass., March 8 (UPI) -- Warehouse workers who supply fresh food to New England supermarket chain Shaw's walked off the job Monday, saying a contract offer was a setback.
"The company wanted to shift a majority of the burden of the (healthcare) cost onto the workers, which basically had them going backwards," said union spokesman Peter Derouen, WBZ-AM, Boston, reported.
"We are being stepped all over," union member Norman Richardson said.
The warehouse workers belong to Local 791 of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union.
In a statement, Shaw's said: "It's unfortunate that some union members have led their co-workers into a strike against our company. We do not feel this was in the best interest of our employees or our customers."
Shaw's said it had a backup plan for getting fresh foods to its stores.
On the same day Shaw's workers voted to strike, workers at Stop & Shop, based in Quincy, Mass., approved a contract proposal, ending a strike threat, WBZ said.
