SYDNEY, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- Mining giant BHP Billiton will be sanctioned in Argentina if it explores for oil off the Falkland Islands, Argentinean authorities warned Saturday.
BHP, the world's largest mining company, holds 14 exploration and production licenses with Falkland Oil and Gas and has said it wants to begin drilling within the next four months.
Argentina this week protested when British-based Desire Petroleum began drilling an exploratory well in the area claimed by Argentina.
Saturday, Pedro Villagra, Argentina's ambassador to Australia, said BHP also would face sanctions if it joins the effort to explore the region as a new major source of energy, The Daily Telegraph reported.
BHP, based in Australia and the United Kingdom, has had gold and copper mining operations in Argentina in the past but currently has no operations in Argentina. BHP had no comment on Argentina's threat, the Telegraph reported.
