NEW YORK, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Crude oil prices closed in on $73 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange Tuesday, as equity markets posted strong gains.
Analysts say price increases may remain subdued in the short term, as equity markts have been on a three-week corrective course and crude oil and gasoline supplies are expected to rise as the industry builds up stock to handle an increase in driving, which normally occurs in the spring.
But traders seemed to ignore that template Tuesday. March delivery of light, sweet crude gained $1.86 to $73.75 per barrel. Heating oil prices added 0.051 cents to $1.9365 per gallon. Reformulated gasoline blendstock prices added 0.04 cents to $1.934 per gallon. Natural gas prices fell 0.072 cents to $5.329 per million British thermal units.
At the pump, the national average price of unleaded gasoline was $2.644 per gallon Tuesday, down from Monday's $2.652, AAA said.
