IMF head urges caution on exit strategies

DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- The head of the International Monetary Fund says leaders must act cautiously to prevent the world from plunging back into recession.

The timing of exit strategies from stimulus packages is at a critical point, IMF Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn said Saturday at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Ending government financial intervention too late will increase public debt while stopping too soon could plunge the world back into recession, he said as a part of a panel called the Global Economic Outlook.

Worldwide, growth is better than expected but still fragile, in large part because the growth is being supported by public funding, he said in comments released by the forum.

The recovery is occurring unevenly around the world with Asia leading the way and the United States and Europe lagging, Strauss-Kahn said.
