NEW YORK, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Crude oil prices closed in on $83 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange Friday as a new trend above $80 has settled in with the winter cold front.
The price of light, sweet crude jumped as freezing temperatures marched across much of the northern hemisphere in late December.
Prices eased overnight, but regained 22 cents Friday to $82.88 per barrel. Heating oil prices gained 0.0229 cents to $2.2065 per gallon. Reformulated gasoline prices rose 0.028 cents to $2.1629 per gallon. Natural gas prices lost 0.06 cents to $5.746 per million British thermal units.
At the pump, the national average price of unleaded gasoline was $2.727 per gallon Friday, up from Thursday's $2.709, AAA said.
In the past week, gasoline prices have gained more than 7 cents per gallon.
