SEATTLE, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- U.S. online retailer Amazon said 2009 marked a turning point in book sales, with digital book sales surpassing sales of books printed on paper on Dec. 25.

In addition, Amazon said its digital book reader Kindle was "the most gifted item in Amazon's history," PC World reported Monday.

The sales of ebooks on Christmas Day were obscured by Amazon's claim coming with no sales figures to allow for comparisons and the point that with a blank Kindle under the tree, users were likely to download their first book on Christmas Day.

Amazon's numbers frustrated at least one reviewer. The company said it sold enough 8GB iPod Touch players to allow for 442 years of continuous music. It said Blu-ray disc players it sold during the holiday shopping season could be placed side by side and reach 27 miles.
