IBM power adapters recalled

WASHINGTON, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- The U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission announced the voluntary recall of IBM power adapters due to a shock hazard.

About 90 power adapters sold with IBM RDX back up hard disk drives were imported from China by IBM of Research Park, N.C.

The commission said a plastic weld on the adapters can fail, allowing protective coverings to separate and expose electric components.

The adapters were sold with IBM RDX removable back up hard disk drives. "Hon-Kwang Electric (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd" is printed on the adapters, while IBM and RDX are printed on the back up hard disk drives.

The units were available January 2009 through July 2009 for between $330 and $760.

Consumers were advised to discontinue use of the power adapters and contact an IBM service provider to receive a free replacement.
