DETROIT, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- General Motors Co. said it would hire 2,400 workers for plants in Michigan, Indiana and Kansas to boost production and better utilize its facilities.
GM said it would turn a Fairfax, Kan., plant into the sole producer of Chevrolet Malibu in November as it phases out the car's production in Orion Township, Mich.
At the end of September, a Ft. Wayne, Ind., plant will pick up production of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. That plant will then add a third shift in April 2010, The Detroit News reported Tuesday.
GM also announced it would move production of the Chevrolet Traverse from a Spring Hill, Tenn., plant to Delta Township near Lansing, Mich.. where a third shift will be added in April.
GM said it would keep the Spring Hill plant on stand-by.
"Today's actions enable GM to add production shifts and maximize the utilization of several of our plants," said Tim Lee, GM's vice president of manufacturing and labor relations.
GM said the adjustments would boost production by 1 million cars and trucks in 2008, a 40 percent increase over its present production schedule.
The new schedule sets GM's 2010 production at 2.8 million vehicles.
