SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- U.S. technology giant Apple released the newest iPhone operating system update Wednesday, promising new features and fixes to eliminate glitches.
The iPhone 3.1 software, a free download for iPhone and iPod owners, makes recommendations for new applications a phone's owner might consider, based on previous applications downloaded.
Given a choice of more than 75,000 applications, that feature could be a time-saver, MacWorld reported.
The update also allows users to download more than 30,000 ring tones and save video from electronic mail. Among features for organizing music, it includes an automatically assembled list of songs based on the phone owner's personal music library.
The system allows users to save videos through electronic mail or multimedia messaging.
It also includes several fixes, including a patch for a program glitch that caused faulty application icon displays.
Apple Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs introduced the new operating system on stage at the company's "It's only rock and roll" event at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco.
