STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- Sales of non-alcoholic products in Sweden by the country's retail alcohol monopoly have increased dramatically so far in 2009, figures show.

While Swedes also have bought more wines, alcoholic spirits and strong beers this year, Systembolaget's revenues from non-alcoholic products were up 16.9 percent in the first seven months compared with the same period last year, The Local reported Friday.

Wines came in second in Sweden with a 10.9 percent increase, while strong beer and liquor sales were up 7.6 percent and 6.6 percent, respectively.

Systembolaget, which enjoyed an overall 9.2 percent sales increase, said in a statement the increases could be due to more Swedes purchasing alcohol instead of traveling abroad because of the poor economy.
