TORRANCE, Calif., Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Honda Motor Co. says it is expanding a safety recall of driver's airbags to include an additional 440,000 Accords, Civics and Acuras.

The Japanese automaker's U.S. headquarters in Torrance, Calif., said Friday the recall expansion includes certain 2001-2002 Honda Accord, 2001 Civic and 2002-2003 Acura TL driver's airbags. The recall was originally initiated in November 2008.

Honda said the recall will require the replacement of the driver's steering-wheel-mounted airbag inflator. It said that in some vehicles, the airbag inflators can produce over-pressurization of the driver's (front) airbag inflator mechanism during airbag deployment.

If an affected inflator deploys, the increased internal pressure may cause its casing to rupture, possibly sending metal fragments through the cloth airbag cushion material and into vehicle occupants. The fragments, Honda said, could possibly cause an injury or fatality to the occupants.
