ROSCOMMON, Mich., July 24 (UPI) -- An official in Roscommon County, Mich., says his county has joined the ranks of numerous other U.S. counties in embracing all-terrain vehicle tourism.
Robin Seymour of the Roscommon County Board of Commissioners' Office said by allowing all-terrain vehicle drivers to use their vehicles on the sides of county roads, county officials were hopeful tourism in the area would increase, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.
"We're trying to do whatever we can to help our businesses," Seymour said.
Counties in states like Michigan, Maine, New York and Vermont have been taking steps to improve conditions for drivers of off-road vehicles.
Included in these efforts are the lifting of bans on the off-road vehicles and the construction of new ATV systems and trail networks, along with increased accessibility to area routes.
Brian Hawthorne of the Blue Ribbon Coalition off-road vehicle user advocacy group told the Journal such attempts to weave ATV trails into main thoroughfares should prove beneficial to surrounding businesses.
