Oil nears record high of $104 a barrel at the NYMEX in New York

NEW YORK, July 7 (UPI) -- Crude oil prices fell under $63 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange Tuesday, with last week's peak above $72 proving unsustainable.

June's unemployment rate rising to 9.5 percent in the United States undermined both stock markets and commodity prices last week.

On Tuesday, crude oil prices lost $1.65 to $62.40 per barrel. Heating oil prices lost 0.0381 cents to $1.5885 per gallon. Reformulated blendstock gasoline fell 0.0206 cents to $1.7198 per gallon. Natural gas prices fell 0.102 cents to $3.385 per million British thermal units.

At the pump, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was $2.604 Tuesday, down from Monday's $2.611 a gallon, AAA said.
