London rail strike has mixed effect

LONDON, June 10 (UPI) -- A scheduled two-day rail workers strike in London began with mixed results, as about half the RMT union workers made it to work anyway, an official said.

"Clearly, support for the RMT leadership's actions is far from the level they were expecting," said Peter Hendy, the commissioner of transport for London.

Union leader Bob Crow accused Transport of London of backing out of a deal at 6 p.m. Tuesday night, undermining the strike.

"The whole thing stinks of last-minute sabotage," Crow told The Times of London.

London Mayor Boris Johnson said the union had frequently shifted its stance, calling the strike, "unnecessary and misery-making."

Rail commuters found some trains with more elbow room than normal as many riders found forms of transportation other than the underground subway, called the "Tube." The strike only disrupted service on a few lines, the newspaper said.
