Retail sales rise in spite of gas prices

WASHINGTON, June 9 (UPI) -- Retail sales in the United States rose slightly in the week ending June 6, the International Council of Shopping Centers-USB reported Tuesday.

Sales were up 0.2 percent for the week, but down 0.8 percent compared to the same week a year ago, the report said.

"A confluence of factors pared consumer demand, including a cooler week temperature-wise than last year," ICSC said.

Weather Trends International said national temperatures averaged 3.9 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than last year.

Rising gasoline prices have also cut into consumers' discretionary cash. In the past six weeks, prices at the pump have risen 57.5 cents per gallon, the report said.
