Hundreds of Disney World workers laid off

ORLANDO, Fla., March 28 (UPI) -- Up to 800 workers were laid off from Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., this week, receiving escorts off the property, sources say.

Citing unnamed sources, Orlando, Fla., cable news channel Central Florida News 13 reported Friday that the layoffs involved between 400 and 800 Walt Disney World workers, a number that officials of the massive theme park would not confirm. But company officials did say the layoffs were part of a previously announced restructuring plan.

Under the plan, Disney said the company is restructuring its back office operations, instituting operational efficiencies and adjusting to falling demand at its theme parks and resorts.

Unionized employees were not affected by the layoffs, Eric Clinton, president of Unite Here! Local 362, told the Florida broadcaster, saying, "Our members' contract provides guarantee on hours, job security and wage increases, so none of our members are affected by these changes."

Disney announced earlier this month that about 50 executives in its theme park division had accepted buyouts.
