SEATTLE, March 20 (UPI) -- U.S. plane maker Boeing sent out 900 layoff notices Friday, part of a cutback of 10,000 jobs Chief Executive Officer Jim McNerney announced in January.

About 650 of the job cuts were in the Commercial Airplanes unit and about 700 involved workers in the Puget Sound area, The Seattle Times reported Friday.

With the new cuts, Boeing has reduced its workforce by 2,000 this year.

Friday's notices give workers a 60-day warning that their jobs are ending, the Times said.
