
LONDON, March 18 (UPI) -- Unemployment in Britain topped the 2 million mark by the end of January, the Office for National Statistics said.
In the three months ending Jan. 31, the number of unemployment rose by 165,000 and totaled 2.03 million, the reporting office said.
Throughout 2008, private sector jobs fell by 105,000 to a total of 23.6 million, while public sector jobs rose by 30,000 to 5.78 million, the Financial Times reported Wednesday.
The unemployment rate reached 6.5 percent, the highest level in 11 years.
Unemployment for those over 50 rose in the year by almost 35 percent, compared to a national average of 26.2 percent.
Job opportunities in manufacturing have shrunk by 50 percent, while jobs in retail, hospitality and finance and business services declined by more than 33 percent, the Financial Times said.
