United to offer broadband on some flights

CHICAGO, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- U.S. carrier United Airlines said some domestic flights will offer onboard Internet connections starting later this year.

The airline expects broadband service for laptops and mobile phones will be available on 13 Boeing 757 jets used for cross country flights geared for business travelers, the Chicago Tribune reported Thursday.

United said it would consider expanding the service if it proves a success on the initial 13 planes, company spokeswoman Robin Urbanski said.

The service will cost $12.95 per flight.

Chicago lawyer Craig McCrohon said the service was more valuable than other on-board extras.

"I've been trapped at 35,000 feet circling airports recently, and I could've used Wi-Fi more than the extra bag of peanuts," he said.
