U.S. markets post gains Friday

NEW YORK, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- U.S. markets put together their fifth straight day of gains in New York in light trading Friday that ended with an early afternoon close.

With many investors staying home on the day after Thanksgiving, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 102.43 points, or 1.17 percent, to 8,829.04. The Standard & Poor's 500 rose 0.96 percent, or 8.56 points, to 896.24. The Nasdaq composite index gained 3.47 points, 0.23 percent, to 1,535.57.

On the New York Stock Exchange, 2,071 stocks advanced and 986 declined on volume of 6.5 billion shares traded.

The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury bond rose 1 20/32 to yield 2.917 percent.

The euro fell to $1.2698, compared to $1.2899. Against the Japanese yen, the dollar rose to 95.63, compared with 95.41 yen.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei average gained 138.88 points to 8,512.27, up 1.66 percent.

In London, the FTSE 100 index gained 61.91 points, up 1.46 percent, to 4,288.01.
