TOKYO, Oct. 31 (UPI) -- Japan's September jobless rate eased to 4 percent from 4.2 percent in August, due largely to jobless men giving up their job search, the government said Friday.
The September numbers also were affected by more women being hired as temporary workers, the report said.
The government said September's ratio of job offers to job seekers dropped for the eighth straight month to its lowest level in more than four years. A slowing economy and the reluctance of corporations to hire were blamed for the trend, Kyodo news reported.
The number of people without jobs in September totaled 2.71 million, up 20,000 from the same month of last year.
The jobless rate for men was 4.1 percent in September, down 0.2 point from August, and the September rate for women remained unchanged at 3.9 percent.
