Motorola phones aims at streamlining

SCHAUMBURG, Ill., Oct. 29 (UPI) -- U.S. electronics giant Motorola Inc. is aiming to streamline its mobile phone division and may trim jobs as it reduces products, sources said.

Sanjay Jha, Motorola's new co-chief executive is planning to bank on Google Inc.'s Android operating system for many of its future phones, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.

Jha is said to be planning on using Android and two other systems, reducing the operating systems options by at least four to speed up product development.

At the same time, plans include abandoning dozens of new phone designs, the Journal reported.

Motorola would not comment on the possibility of job cuts, which may be announced with the release of its third quarter financial report Thursday.
