MINNEAPOLIS, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- U.S. mattress retailer Select Comfort said it would close five stores in the fourth quarter and accelerate closings in 2009.
The company said its goal would cut back to 471 stores by the end of the year and close about 20 stores in the first quarter of 2009, the Riverside, Calif., Press-Enterprise reported Monday.
"We expect difficult conditions to persist for the remainder of the year and through 2009, as the economy and consumer buying continue to weaken," Chief Executive Officer Bill McLaughlin said in a statement.
Select Comfort same-store sales, marking sales in locations that have been opened at least a year, fell 27 percent in the third quarter, the Press-Enterprise reported.
