TOKYO, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Japan will sign bilateral free trade agreements with Vietnam and Switzerland, the government said Monday, ending more than a year of talks.
Takeo Kawamura, who took over as the chief Cabinet secretary under Prime Minister Taro Aso, told reporters Japan found common ground on most issues to liberalize trade with the two countries, Kyodo news service reported.
The agreements are expected to be signed by early next year.
The FTA with Vietnam will free about 92 percent of the bilateral trade from tariffs in 10 years, the report said. The FTA with Switzerland will eliminate duties on 99 percent of the goods in 10 years.
Switzerland will become the first European country to conclude such an agreement with Japan. For Vietnam, it will be the first such bilateral deal, the report said.
Other countries with which Japan has FTAs include Singapore, Indonesia, Mexico, Thailand and Chile.
