MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Sept. 23 (UPI) -- Google and T-Mobile said Tuesday they were ready to challenge U.S. rival Apple for a share of the hand-held smartphone business.
Apple introduced iPhone's third generation device in July. One of the phone's primary features is the ease in which owners can install their own software to increase its applications.
Similarly, the $179 T-Mobile G1 will allow for third parties to add software applications to the phone, The New York Times reported.
The T-Mobile G1 also features a color touch screen that slides sideways to reveal a full keyboard, the Times reported.
Google and T-Mobile said the device would be available to U.S. customers Oct. 22. It will be available in Britain in November and in other European markets by early 2009, the companies said.
"I think frankly this device will have mass appeal," chief technology and innovation officer of T-Mobile USA. Cole Brodman told the Times.
The phones feature Android operating software, designed to enhance Google's Internet dominance, the Times reported.
