STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Swedish automaker Volvo said it would develop 14 prototype trucks to run on a biofuel by-product of the paper and pulp industry.
The substance known as black liquor or DME has been used as an aerosol propellant for decades, Swedish newspaper The Local reported Friday.
DME is considered non-carcinogenic, non-mutagenic and non-toxic, The Local said. It also produces "ultra-low exhaust emissions," the newspaper said.
"If we have a DME plant at every paper mill in Sweden, we could produce enough biofuel to substitute one third of the country's diesel fuels," said Kjell Andersson, information director for The Swedish Bioenergy Association.
"We have the technology for DME-powered engines ready. We just need to see evidence of the sustainability of the business in a broader way, such as distribution and filling stations, before we can start large-scale commercial vehicle production" Volvo spokesman Pär Aronsson said.
Volvo said it could have the prototype trucks ready within 18 months.
