WASHINGTON, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced an expanded voluntary recall of Electra Bicycle Co. Amsterdam bicycles due to an injury risk.

The chains on the Amsterdam bicycles can derail, possibly causing an injury to riders, CPSC said. Electra Bicycle Co. LLC of Vista, Calif, has received one report of an injury caused by a rider falling after the chain derailed, CPSC said.

About 1,500 bicycles are involved in the new recall. Previously 9,500 bicycles were recalled. The new recall involves the Classic 3, Original 3, Royal 8 and Sport 3 bicycles.

These bicycles have enclosed chain guards. The words "Electra" and "Amsterdam are printed on the bicycle frame or the chain guard and sometimes on both.

The bicycles were sold January 2007 through June 2008 for $400-$850.

Consumers were advised to stop using the bicycles and contact Electra for a free inspection and repair.

Consumers can call 800-261-1644 for information.
