Poll: Half of U.S. workers feel underpaid

PRINCETON, N.J., Aug. 18 (UPI) -- U.S. wage earners are split nearly in half by those who say they feel underpaid and those who say they are adequately paid, researchers say.

Fifty-one percent of the 557 adults who responded to an Aug. 7-10 survey indicated they felt they should be paid more, the Gallup research group said. Forty-six percent indicated they felt adequately paid and 3 percent indicated the felt overpaid.

The figures held close to consistent for black and white workers and by those with high school degrees and those with at least some college education, Gallup said.

There was a gender gap, however, Gallup said. Forty-seven percent of men indicated they felt underpaid, while 55 percent of women indicated they felt underpaid.

Not surprisingly, there was also a gap among income groups with only 38 percent of those earning $75,000 a year or more indicating they felt underpaid and 62 percent of those making less then $75,000 a year indicating the same thing.

There was also a political split with 59 percent of the Democrats polled indicating they felt underpaid compared with 44 percent among Republicans.

The poll carried a margin of error is plus and minus 5 percentage points, Gallup said.
