U.S. online job ads declined in July

NEW YORK, July 30 (UPI) -- New U.S. online job ads declined by 330,800 in the month of July, an industry group said.

The Conference Board said that in July there were 3.864 million online job vacancies advertised, down from a revised figure of 4.194 million in June, and down 5.4 percent from from the number of listings a year ago.

July marks the fifth consecutive month of year-over-year declines, the Conference Board said.

For the month, there were 2.5 advertised jobs for every 100 people in the labor force, a drop from a high of 2.9 set in May 2007.

"July is typically a slow month in terms of labor demand, but this month advertised vacancies were weaker than we would expect," Gad Levanon, senior economist at The Conference Board said.

Alaska, Delaware and Colorado continued to show strong online advertising numbers, with those states posting more than four ads for every 100 persons in the states' labor pools.

By occupation, healthcare and computer and mathematical sectors posted the highest number of jobs, 527,200 and 510,600 respectively.

"Many jobs in high demand are also, on average, among the highest paying occupations," Levanon said.
