U.S. markets recover from steep losses
DOWNERS GROVE, Ill., July 21 (UPI) -- The Center for Science in the Public Interest said Sara Lee, an Illinois consumer foods company, will adjust labels regarding its "Whole Grain White Bread."
CSPI, in a release Monday, said it had threatened to file a lawsuit against Sara Lee regarding labeling on the bread wrappers. The non-profit nutrition organization alleged that Sara Lee's "Whole Grain White Bread" labels claimed the bread had as much fiber as 100 percent whole wheat products.
"As part of the agreement, Sara Lee will add copy to the label stating that two slices have 10 grams of whole grain and that (the U.S. Department of Agriculture) recommends consumption of 48 grams of whole grains daily," the CSPI release said.
"This settlement will help consumers comparison shop among breads: plain white bread, breads like Sara Lee's with 30 percent whole grains, and 100 percent whole wheat bread," CSPI Executive Director Michael F. Jacobson said.
