The Washington Post reported Saturday its parent company will purchase the Miami station in order to increase its revenue by combining WTVJ with another area network to create a two-station group.

"We are pleased to be able to reach an agreement to purchase such a historic station as WTVJ, the first TV station to broadcast in Florida," Post-Newsweek Stations President Alan Frank said in a statement Friday.

Typically two-station groups, which are common in the TV industry, are owned by major networks such as NBC or CBS. It also is rare when a company has two stations affiliated with one of those major networks, The Post said.

The new Washington Post Co. group breaches both those market traditions while following current Federal Communications Commission regulations.

The Post said FCC officials only allow a company to own two TV stations in a single city if neither station is a top-rated station and if the city is large enough.
