OTTAWA, July 17 (UPI) -- Travel into and out of Canada increased in May, with more Canadians leaving than visitors arriving, Statistics Canada reported Thursday.
The agency said Canadian residents took 4.5 million trips outside the country in May, up 1.6 percent from April. Conversely, visitors made 2.3 million trips to Canada, up 0.4 percent from the previous month.
Of the trips by Canadians, 3.8 million were to the United States, up 2 percent from April, StatsCan said. With Canada's dollar at or above par with the U.S. dollar, Canadians' same-day car travel to the United States increased 1.8 percent to 2.1 million trips and overnight travel to the United States rose 2.1 percent.
The report said travel from 7 of the top 12 overseas markets to Canada declined in May, led by the Netherlands with a 16.2 percent decline. However, travel into Canada from India rose 11.8 percent in May.
