LONDON, July 16 (UPI) -- First-time unemployment claims in Britain rose in June to the highest level since December 1992, the government reported Wednesday.

While a record number in Britain are working, unemployment claims are up, the Times of London reported.

In the fifth straight month of increases, 15,500 additional persons filed for unemployment benefits, for a total of 840,000 in Britain now receiving jobless benefits.

The Office of National Statistics also revised its May first-time unemployment claims figures, adding 9,000 workers for a total of 14,300.

In the second quarter, 29.59 million people were working in Britain, the highest number since 1971, the Times reported. Job vacancies, simultaneously, declined by 32,200, the report said.
