LONDON, July 10 (UPI) -- Baggage handlers said more than 900 bags turn up missing each day at a Heathrow Airport's new airline terminal in London.

Heathrow's Terminal 5, which opened in March with a nightmare of flight and luggage handling problems, loses an average 932 bags a day, union leaders told House of Commons Select Committee members Wednesday, The Daily Telegraph reported.

More than 28,000 pieces of luggage disappeared in the first few weeks of the terminal's opening and more than 250 flights were delayed the day British Airways opened business in the terminal, the report said.

Lost luggage "will happen today and it will happen tomorrow," Steve Turner, Air Transportation National Secretary of the union Unite told the committee.

While British Airways and BAA were planning the new terminal's operations, "there was a complete failure to consult the trade unions," Turner said.
