U.S. markets recover from steep losses
LONDON, July 5 (UPI) -- A growing number of Indian nationals are taking advantage of their country's growth to visit Britain as tourists, industry officials say.
VisitBritain spokesman Elliot Frisby said between 1993 and 2007, the number of Indian tourists visiting Britain has risen by nearly 170 percent and the rate does not seem to be slowing, The Times of London reported Saturday.
"In 10 years' time, if the growth rates stay the same, this could be one of our biggest markets," the tourism official said.
The increased tourism activity from India has been credited to air travel expansion and the growing number of wealthy, middle-class individuals in the Asian country.
Meanwhile, tourism figures show the number of U.S. citizens visiting Britain is declining. The Times said the number of U.S. tourists, previously seen as the most valued visitors to Britain, declined by 7.9 percent in 2007 compared to one year earlier.
