U.S. markets sputter to close Monday

Oil prices continue to climb during trading at the NYMEX in New York

NEW YORK, June 30 (UPI) -- A modest rally in U.S. stock indexes faded near the close of trading Monday, ending the last day of the quarter with mixed results on major boards.

The Dow Jones industrial average, up 78 points at midday, closed up 3.50 points, or 0.03 percent, at 11,350.01. The Standard and Poor's 500 index gained 1.62 points to 1,280.00, up 0.13 percent. The Nasdaq composite index fell 22.65 points to 2,292.98, off 0.98 percent.

On the New York Stock Exchange, 1,269 stocks advanced and 1,898 declined on a volume of 1.608 billion shares traded.

The 10-year U.S. Treasury note was unchanged, yielding 3.971 percent.

The euro traded at $1.5738 from Friday's $1.543, while the dollar traded at 106.15 yen from Friday's 106.16 yen.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei index lost 62.98 points to 13,481.38, off 0.46 percent.

In London, the FTSE 100 index gained 96 points to 5,625.90, up 1.74 percent.
