Help wanted index fell in May

NEW YORK, June 26 (UPI) -- The Help-Wanted Advertising Index fell 1 point in May in the United States, the Conference Board reported Thursday.

The index, indicating a decline in classified ads for jobs in 51 major U.S. newspapers, fell to 17 from 18 a month ago and from 27 a year ago, the report said.

Help ads declined in all nine regions of the country with the steepest decline in the West North Central Region, where ads were down 25.9 percent. Job ads in the Pacific Region were down 24.7 percent, while ads declined 19 percent in the East North Central Region, the Conference Board said.

"There's no sign that improvement is just around the corner. The number of jobs fell in each of the first five months of the year," said Ken Goldstein, labor economist at the Conference Board.

"Little wonder why consumer expectations are at an all-time low," Goldstein said in a statement, warning people to "expect more of the same right through the summer and fall months."
