PRINCETON, N.J., June 25 (UPI) -- Respondents to a Gallup survey on the U.S. economy indicated levels of pessimism unseen for 17 years, the research group said.

Forty-seven percent of respondents in a June 16-22 poll indicated they believed current economic conditions were "poor,",while those indicating conditions were "getting worse" reached record high, Gallup said.

Two groups, college graduates and Republicans, were less pessimistic about the economy -- graduates because they tend to earn more and Republicans for the same reason "and perhaps some loyalty to the Republican in the White House," Gallup said.

The survey included interviews with about 3,000 adults and had a margin of error of plus and minus two percentage points, Gallup said.
